There difference between plywood and MDF It's not a question of absolute quality. They are different materials, with different behaviors: one holds screws, the other holds its shape. Choosing the wrong materials is the most common cause of furniture sagging after two moves.

How they are made, in one line each

The crisscrossing of the fibers in plywood is the reason for its stability: each layer counteracts the movement of the one below. It's why a plywood panel stays flat where a solid board would bend.

Where everyone really works

- Multilayer: weight-bearing shelves, drawer bottoms, and frames. It holds screws well and resists bending. For outdoor or marine versions, the glue is different, not the wood.
- Blockboard: large doors and countertops where lightness and stability are required. Cheaper than solid wood, much more stable.
- MDF: surfaces to be lacquered and shaped parts. It has a smooth surface and can be milled without chipping. It's the perfect material for a smooth painted front.
- Chipboard (usually ennobled): mass-produced furniture, where the load is modest and cost dictates.
Where instead they give in
Three limitations that are worth knowing about sooner rather than later.
- MDF and water don't mix. The compressed fiber swells and never comes back. Under a sink, in the bathroom, or on a wet countertop, swelling is a matter of time—unless you use the advertised water-repellent versions.
- The chipboard holds poorly under repeated screws. Disassembling and reassembling a piece of furniture twice is often enough to ruin the seats.
- Low-quality plywood hides gaps between the layers. You can see them on the cut edge: if there are holes, the screw won't grip there.
The question about emissions

The panels are held together by resins, and some release formaldehyde. There are emission classes: class E1 This is the commonly used European reference, and there are panels on the market with even lower emissions, declared by the manufacturer.
For bedroom or children's room furniture, asking about the emission class is a legitimate question, and one that a reputable retailer will answer. If no one knows the answer, it's already information.
The final criterion
A well-made piece of furniture uses different materials in the right places: plywood frame, lacquered MDF fronts, perhaps a solid wood top. It's not a compromise, it's design.
Be equally wary of anyone who tells you they're selling "all solid wood" at a low price, and anyone who dismisses panels as low-quality material. Solid wood, in certain areas, would be the worst choice.
